A
sport utility
vehicle (SUV) is a type of passenger vehicle which
combines the passenger-carrying capacity and the
load-hauling of a large station wagon or minivan, but with
features designed to driven off-road. The popularity of SUVs
has never been higher and the criticisms which sports
utility vehicles have received is equally as sharp.
SUVs were originally designed from light truck platforms,
but have developed to have the general shape of a large
station wagon, but are typically taller. Typical to a light
truck platform, SUVs have a higher seating capacity than a
station wagon and a suspension designed to give higher
ground clearance for off-road driving. Descended from
commercial and military vehicles such as the Jeep and Land
Rover, they have become increasingly popular, particularly
with rural drivers, due to their off-road abilities.
Urban SUV owners point the large, comfortable cabins,
safety, load-hauling capacity, and the recreational
possibilities of the vehicles. The explosive growth in SUV
ownership has attracted much criticism, primarily to the
risks of other road users and the environment--higher
emission rates and poor fuel economy.
